HVAC
HVAC 1 & 2HVAC 1 and 2 introduce students to the fundamental principles, practices, and technologies used in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) industry. The courses utilize the NCCER curriculum and combine classroom instruction with extensive hands-on training.
Students develop foundational knowledge and practical skills in workplace safety, hand and power tools, basic electrical systems, HVAC components, and system operation. Throughout the program, students learn to read and interpret wiring diagrams and develop the skills necessary to install, wire, replace, and troubleshoot HVAC components.
By the end of HVAC 1 and 2, students will be able to:
- Read and interpret electrical and wiring diagrams.
- Identify, install, and replace HVAC motors and common system components.
- Perform high-voltage wiring for HVAC equipment, including disconnects, switches, and circuit breakers.
- Perform low-voltage wiring, including thermostats and HVAC control circuits.
- Install, configure, and program thermostats.
- Apply proper safety procedures and practices in an HVAC work environment.
- Demonstrate foundational knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level employment or continued technical training in the HVAC industry.
Upon successful completion of the first year, students will have the opportunity to earn OSHA 10 certification and complete the NCCER Core Curriculum certification.
HVAC 3 & 4HVAC 3 and 4 build upon the foundational skills developed in HVAC 1 and 2 and provide students with more advanced technical training in residential and light commercial HVAC systems. The courses utilize the NCCER curriculum and emphasize advanced electrical, mechanical, installation, troubleshooting, and service skills. Students receive instruction and hands-on experience in basic electricity, gas furnaces, heat pumps, air distribution systems, copper and plastic piping practices, ferrous metal piping, soldering, brazing, and refrigerant systems.
By the end of HVAC 3 and 4, students will be able to:
- Perform electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics.
- Install, service, and troubleshoot furnaces and heat pump systems.
- Install and work with air distribution systems.
- Properly measure, cut, flare, swage, bend, solder, and braze copper tubing.
- Identify and locate refrigerant leaks.
- Properly recover, evacuate, and charge refrigeration systems using appropriate recovery equipment, vacuum pumps, gauges, and charging procedures.
- Perform system diagnostics and troubleshoot HVAC equipment to identify and correct operating problems.
- Apply industry-standard safety procedures and practices.
- Demonstrate the skills necessary to install and commission a complete HVAC mechanical system.
Upon successful completion of HVAC 3 and 4, students will be prepared to pursue entry-level employment, apprenticeships, industry credentials, or additional post-secondary education and training in the HVAC/R field. Students will also have the opportunity to earn EPA Section 608 certification, an industry-recognized credential required for technicians who work with regulated refrigerants.
